I also find that the OER includes opportunities for interactive learning, such as the use of videos, case studies, knowledge checks, etc., which can be great tools to promote confidence and understanding. They are able to be accessed anywhere and students don't have to stress about the cost of the textbook. They have all the material and information they need because it is easy to access for them. Any estimated student cost savings from using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? Not sure of the exact number, but it has to be thousands of dollars. Fun fact: I grew up less than a mile away from my husband!

Pharmacology, Health Alterations, and Clinical How long have you been with CVTC? 5 semesters How long have you been using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? 4 semesters What is your favorite part of using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? Aside from the cost savings, my favorite part is the availability to students. They get iPads their first semester and can use that to access the book and be able to download it when not connected to WiFi. They also don't have to carry around a big, heavy book. Any estimated student cost savings from using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? For Pharmacology, it saves on average $21,240 per year.

Basic Skills, Pharmacology, and Clinical How long have you been with CVTC? 4.5 years How long have you been using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? 2 years What is your favorite part of using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? The absolute best part is the money that students are saving! Also, I can use any of the textbooks across the first-semester curriculum to tie concepts from all the courses together. I use the interactive sections of chapters in clinical to bring theory into practice and apply those to what students are experiencing in a real-world setting. I only need a device to access and do not need to haul three textbooks along. Any estimated student cost savings from using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? $300 for two courses.

College Algebra, Math & Logic, Math Reasoning, and Trigonometry How long have you been with CVTC? 6 years How long have you been using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? I converted my first class in 2017, but most of the other classes were converted in 2020. What is your favorite part of using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? I like that students can get in and use a text on day one. They don't need to wait for financial aid or worry about issues with manufacturer's websites being down or not working for students. I can also take out the chapters/sections we don't use and tailor them to my teaching style. Any estimated student cost savings from using low-cost and/or no-cost textbooks? For College Algebra, the activation was $95 per student, and we typically have 3-4 sections of that course in the fall semester alone, which leaves a savings of over $10,000 in just one semester.
